Dearest Reader,
I recently prompted Twitter dot com asking “what would my readers want future Newsletter Topics To Include? Will probably ignore all suggestions” and I actually didn’t ignore all suggestions! Exactly two people asked me to discuss my favorite books, and that got me thinking about how for as long as I’ve had a “platform” on Twitter dot com I have wanted to start a book club but never knew… how to do that? Because I had no source to actually start one. Believe me, I tried. I have one sided beef with GoodReads over it, literally why is it like that?
Still, follow me on GoodReads! I do typically use it to update on every single thought I have while reading a book, and then review said book. I love when people interact with me there, even though I quite literally can’t engage back because the interface is horrific.
If you don’t follow me on GoodReads and were wondering, I am currently reading Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert, though as I am currently employed and on my last two days off I fell terribly ill, I haven’t had the most time to actually read it. My favorite book of all time is Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty or, equally as basic of an answer if not more, Emma by Jane Austen. As for books I’ve read in the past year or so, my favorites include : My Body by Emily Ratajkowski and Seven Days In June by Tia Williams… Also, promise not to judge me, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I can’t pretend to hate it just because the timeline woke up one day and decided it sucked, that has nothing to do with me, sorry. (I know that it’s still a very popular book, but you know how the timeline works, they switch up on you!)
Anyways, I want to try to make an interactive book club of sorts with my readers. My idea is that all of my readers can either comment here, DM me or tweet me using the tag #TheNotJessBookClub with a book suggestion and eventually I will decide a Book of the Month, and we (anyone who chooses to participate) will read it together. You all can tweet your thoughts on the book as you read along using the tag #TheNotJessBookClub. At the end of the month I will post a tweet asking for my readers final thoughts on the Book of the Month, and then in my next issue, monthly or bimonthly, I will share my thoughts and add a few prompts for further discussion on the book. Literally just a virtual book club! Watch out, Reese Witherspoon!
(Pictured above : Reese Witherspoon. She has nothing on me!)
Kidding. I could never match Elle Woods, but still… I want a book club of my own!
As I mentioned earlier, I am currently reading Act Your Age, Eve Brown which means I won’t start this quite yet, but I do think as I’m preoccupied reading something else, it would be a great time to prompt my fellow readers : What should our first official book club pick be? It can be anything! If you want to suggest your favorite book, go ahead now. If you want to suggest a book on your shelf that you haven’t read yet but want to, yass do it! We are in our joint reader eras, suggest away using #TheNotJessBookClub on Twitter, or in the comments below.
I have low expectations for how this will turn out. I doubt my readers are fine literature girls, no offense. But if this flops we will just… pretend it didn’t happen. Really, if it flops I will just assign myself a Book of the Month and do a newsletter book review monthly with no reader participation necessary. I’ll still even call it a Book Club for branding purposes. Anything to hit my GoodReads goal this year, you know? But I want to prompt some audience participation, I want to try this out and this seems to be a convenient platform to try and branch out.
I have some books on my reading list, such as : Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron and I’ve been meaning to get into Mariana Zapata recently, but there is no limit as to what you can suggest. I am open to any recommendations and picks for consideration. If I don’t choose your book first, don’t worry! I will keep a running list of every recommendation I get and will be taking them all into great consideration for future reference.
That’s all for this issue, I have no excuse to drag it out any more than I already have. I just wanted a book club and decided, “you know what? I get a bit of engagement with this newsletter thing… why not use that for personal gain?” And here we are now. Be sure to reach out to me your picks for what books we should read together here! Just tweet out the book title and author and maybe even give a little synopsis if you can, and be sure to interact using the #TheNotJessBookClub tag!
